Nightingale Stable
The fields around me were glowing slightly with the setting sun, I followed closely behind an instructor. She was talking but I wasn't paying much attention because I pretty much got all the information I needed from overhearing some girls in the hall. Supposedly these horses can speak to you, but that was the last thing I'd ever believe in my life. Maybe they meant it figuratively, who knew? Well I'd figure it out soon enough. In the distance, as I tried not to stumble off the pathway, I saw a beautiful, snow white stable and behind that one at least three acres away were two others. I looked in awe at the magnificent stables ahead.
Practically bumping into the female instructor before me, she laughed as I regained my composure. "Interesting I know Ms. Porter, but right now will be the greatest beginning to any journey you'll ever take." The instructor gestured to the closed doors infront of us. The white doors belonged to the first stable, the perfect white one. I hadn't noticed we had stopped in front. "I'm sorry to say, but I have no idea what you're talking about." I said as polite as I possibly could, but it came out more confused then I intended. "Just step in through these doors and find out. You'll understand Ms. Porter." The instructor smiled sweetly and gestured again toward the door.
Nodding out of respect, my pale hand slipped from under my jacket onto the door handle and I pulled with all my might. The door slid open so smoothly I was shocked. Before I knew it, I was in the stable, the door shut behind me and no instructor next to me. Fear crept up on me and I felt my mind stretching out of it's limits. Something unknown was in these stables and it frightened me to find out. Unlike outside in the all to cold landscape of Catalpa, it was warm with the massive body heat from the horses. A row of lights flickered on down the isle, revieling a multitude of stalls.
Sighing, I started to walk down the isle waiting for anything to happen. As I walked, loss strands of hay crackled under my converse thats when I saw life arise in the stable. Horses heads popped out curiously from the stalls and I stayed well within the middle of the isle. I loved horses, but something about this school, this stable, these horses were not the same as any other. Something was off. Holding my arms tight to my chest, I stayed alert to make sure no one popped out form the corner to scar me, after all I was a newbie and I knew the student body kept tabs on that. "What am I supposed to do here? Just pick a dumb horse and leave? Sounds like a good idea...." I spoke, sarcasm clearly in my voice. I continued to walk when I heard a stir in one in particular stable.
"To think I'd be stuck with a smart a** like you. You gotta be kidding me..." I practically tripped over my own footing, actually I did and I hit the floors on my hands and knees. Wide-eyed I looked up to see a huge massive horse head peer down at me. Snorting, the horse bent his head and pulled on my hood for me to get up. "You might want to steady yourself kid. You're looking a little pale."
[/i] the stallion brayed in laughter. I did what he "said" and I gripped onto the railing of his stall. I felt sweat slip down my forehead and I wiped it off hastily. 'So this was what they meant...holy crap I am so screwed.' I thought then looked up and decided to play along with my sudden strange hallucination. "That was you right? heh this is one heck of a joke!" I laughed half-heatedly and I could tell by the horses face that I was in fact not dreaming at all. "This is real, huh" I whispered scared. "Wow not only are you chipper but you're smart too, fabulous"[/i] his tone was sarcastic. At least we had that in common. Something in common with a horse, madness. I couldn't help but laugh, this was the most I've laughed since I got here. His sarcasm made me laugh ans that was a perk. Finishing my laughing spell, I stuck out my hand and reached out to pet his muzzle. Pulling away abruptly, he let me finally touch him. "So does that mean you "chose" me?" I had no idea what I was talking about but it made sense considering the other horses looked like they were waiting for their chosen students. "Guess you are kid...destiny is a funny thing"[/i] he brayed, his voice as strong and demanding of attention as any. "Well my name's not kid, call me Max." I said and exteneded my hand for a handshake as I was used to in introductions, he was a horse as I forgot. "You're still a kid to me. Why don't you give me a name."[/i] He made a full circle in his pen, and stood with his head held up with pride. Thinking hard and long I tapped my pointer finger on my chin as I thought. "Well how about I call you "Horse" since kid is what you call me." I spoke gingerly, the stallion brushed his hoof against the floor in agitation but laughed it off. "touche"[/i] his voice penetrated my mind, and I could tell the amusement he found in my personality. Adjusting himself in the stall, he walking with such grace that it sparked and idea. Perking up, I couldn't help but shout "Dancer!" the stallion's head perked aswell. "What do you think, huh? You move like you dance" I leaned against the stall. "I can't say I hate it. Alright then, the name's Dancer. I'll make that name masculine yet." He spoke confidently and then laughed. I did the same. Maybe this would be more interesting then I thought. I brushed my fingers through his black mane and snorted in disbelief. ' Wait till my mom hears about this. My first friend in Catalpa and it's a horse.' [/blockquote]
