Why did we have to leave the barn? Knight's words bounced off the inside of skull as he spoke. Because you spend too much time in the stable, that and I care about your health. Knight looked over at me with his ears back in a snarl was forming on his lips. He didn't say anything to me but I knew that he was thinking. I smiled at him and patted his shoulder as we continued to walk briskly down the beach side by side. After a long period of silence his voice rang again, it was clear he was complaining. You drag me from my cozy stall to a beach......and not even one with food on it. What is wrong with you?
I rolled my eyes at him but couldn't help but laugh at what he was saying as we kept walking down the beach. Do you have a problem spending quality time with me Knight? I looked over at him with a smile and then repositioned my backpack. Knight breathed heavily through his nostrils even though the beach was quite flat and the sun wasn't even beating down. No problem with you toots. Just your really stink a picking fun things to do. He breathed in my head and shook my head before stopping. Let's take a break, Mr. Tubby.
Knight stopped to and he lowered his head, I thought for a moment he was going to topple over or roll. I stepped aside till I was at the end of the rope. Knight then brought his head back up. Your not allowed to plan fun events anymore. From now on it's my call. I giggled a little as Knight looked up at me with an exhausted face. His eyes where coal black and serious. I don't think I have ever seen him this serious except for at meal times and I won't spring him any extra hay.

"Mouse, can we go back now?" Ridge whinnied softly, yet he carried on walking along at the same pace. The two of us were finally starting to get somewhere now. It was slow and Ridge still didn't like mentioning any part of his past, but he was beginning to trust me.
I had to admit though, maybe this ride to the beach hadn't exactly been my greatest of plans really, not when we had only really just begun to get used to each other properly.
"What's wrong then, you getting tired?" I questioned him, a slightly teasing tone in my voice. Mouse wasn't exactly my favoured nickname, yet the black horse seemed to love it, and found plenty of humour in comparing the irony that my name was actually Kat.
"No" He defended himself, sounding a little agitated by the statement and for a moment I expected him to break into a run, partially to prove me wrong. He soon calmed himself though, and we continued along at the same steady pace.
"Alright Ridge, calm down." I stated, patting his neck a little and then looking down the beach again. Not too far away from our current position, I noticed a girl and her horse and wondered on whether to go speak to them, more to give Ridge a break than anything else.
I wasn't sure how much talking I'd actually get done, so far I'd only made three friends in Catalpa, Steve, Rachel and of course Ridge. He still could count as a friend, even though he was a horse that somehow had the ability to speak to me. I tried not to think about the strangeness of it too much, I was probably mad enough already.
"Shall we go stop over there, say hello?" I questioned and felt Ridge pull at his reigns a little to turn his head in their direction. "You mean for me to say hello Mouse." Ridge corrected me. It was odd how well this horse had worked out my personality, and that had been where the nickname generated from.
I rolled my eyes and brought him to a stop before getting down from the saddle. "Come on" I stated simply, giving the reigns a gently pull to encourage him to walk. "There is a carrot in it for you if you behave." "Only one?"
[/i] He questioned and he nudged my pocket lightly. "You've gotten much greedier lately Ridge." I stated simply.[/blockquote]

My eyes stayed locked on Knight's but he broke my gaze to turn his skull in the direction of two on coming figures. Knight sighed and then his voice boomed like velvet in my head Company. I looked over to see what he meant and also notice the oncoming horse and rider. They were unfamiliar but I've never been one not to be friendly. Knight however looked nervous. He was shaking a bit in his knees and his ears where twitching back a fourth almost like they where on a timer. His tail clasped down on his rump and then he circled till his whole body was behind me.
I looked back at him. His nose was hanging over my shoulder. His ears where forward now but I could still sense his nervous status. Are you going to be okay Knight? I brought my hand back and placed it on his neck and then began stroke him in a calming way. I could feel all his muscles under my fingertips. He was so tense. I'll let you in on something. I've never really gotten to know too many people. They make me........anxious. He snorted and then drew his face away till I could feel it once more pressed against the small of my back.
I then turned around to face him. Don't worry Knight, nobody will ever hurt you while you have me. I rubbed his head affectionately and then turned back to face the knew arrivals. Hi there! I called and smiled towards her happily. Nice day, isn't it? Knight then murmured in my head Nice day to relax in a stall, if you ask me.. I had to control the smirk that was forming on my face. Knight really was the perfect match for me, a blubbering mess that just need to relax for once.

Knight wasn't the only one who was a little wary though, I felt Ridge starting to slow the closer that we got to the girl and her horse. I turned back to look at him, that wary look returning to his eyes.
"Ridge, I won't hurt you, I won't let anyone else hurt you." I whispered to him briefly and gave a gentle tug at the reigns. I would have never suggested this if I thought for any second Ridge would start heading back to his old ways.
Slowly he began to move again and I turned my attention back to the girl again as she spoke, clearly having noticed me. I gave a small wave in return and smiled back as I greeted her. "Hello. I'm Kat" I stated, introducing myself as I got a little closer. "Mouse." [/i] Ridge corrected me, though I chose to ignore him. "This is Ridge." I continued, gently patting running my hand along Ridge's neck. For a moment I had considered introducing him as 'Ridgey Boy' due to his comment, but I let it slide, especially after feeling him tense a little bit, he certainly did have trust issues with strangers.[/blockquote]

Nice to meet you, Ridge, Kat I looked at them both and saw the nervousness in Ridge. I knew saying anymore but 'hi' was not recommended. My name is Ty and this big hunk of stud is Knight. I looked to Knight who was still standing behind me like I was some great wall nobody could go through. I'm more stud then you know. He commented in my head and I smirked back at him with a 'yea, sure you are big boy' look/thought. I looked back to Kat and then turned my attention back to the ground for a moment. I scuffed the toe of boot in the sand and then looked back up to the sun.
Winter is a good time to come to the beach, isn't it? I said being both serious and playful with the discussion choice of the weather. I've never had trouble starting a conversation before so I really wasn't sure why I was having trouble now. I sighed and then Knight moved back out into the open, no doubt trying to prove a point about my 'big hunk of stud' statement.

"Nice to meet you both too" I stated smiling back again and looking to the horse, and his failing attempts to hide behind Ty. It was quite a funny sight actually, and realised that really, Ridge wasn't much better, his gaze turning away from the pair and instead switching between me and the ground. No doubt though that as he looked to me he was in fact awaiting some sort of treat.
"It's certainly much quieter" I stated in response, though in truth I had no idea how busy the beach here got in Summer, I was simply assuming it would be busy. It was a beach after all. "Could be a little warmer though" I added, though in truth I currently wasn't too affected by the weather, aside from the chilly wind that clawed at my face.
"Do you mind if we join you?" I questioned after a moment, a little shyly really despite the fact that Ty seemed like a nice girl. I was almost scared to ask really, not wanting to invade at all and I pondered for a moment why I had ever thought it would be a good idea. "You can say no if you want. There's plenty of space around here at the moment" I used that opportunity to look away and at the rest of the beach, still sort of regretting this.
"Mouse, you're worse than him." [/i] Ridge muttered in my mind, the him clearly referring to Knight and his poor hiding skills.[/blockquote]

My happy mood never faded as the wind hit my face with a cold rush. I could feel my cheeks growing red from the bitter cold but I didn't care because everything about planet earth was just something to embrace. I turned my attention back to her statement about the beach being much quieter. I had to agree of coarse. Then again I haven't been here that long, but from memories of the beaches back home I was sure this place was quite the socializing spot in the summer. It is very quite here, now. Can't imagine it will stay that way when it comes to summer. I said with a grin. Sure would be nice if this wind would let up for a minute, wouldn't it?
I took some slack out of the lead rope for I could feel Knight trying to walk away. I gave a short tug and he stopped. I looked over at him he was only a few inches away but still he was not allowed to just leave and I would make sure he knew it. Let's get out of here. I need to work off those extra pounds, after all. I heard a thick layer of sarcasm roll off the words in my head. I scowled at him deliberately trying to pass on my own message that he better get his butt back over here. He let out a snort and back tracked a few inches.
I turned my attention back to Kat. Sorry about that, he is so rude sometimes. I smiled back at her and then let out a small giggle You can hang out with us, we don't mind. The more the merrier! I felt like I had the personality of a one of the munchkin men from Wizard of Oz but I was okay with that. I never cared much for what other people thought of my up beat personality.

I smiled as she commented on the wind; my thoughts exactly. The weather was slowly starting to ease up as the season dragged on towards Spring, though I had to admit it wasn't changing quick enough.
I looked to Ridge for a second, feeling him turning his head away again, tugging lightly at the reigns. And I glanced towards Ty as she spoke again. "He's not a problem really." I stated, after all I couldn't understand his words anyway, only Ridge's. Although at the moment, without speaking a word to the black horse, I knew what was bothering him. Apparently that trust issue hadn't been fixed quite as much as I thought. I didn't mind him being a little wary of others, but this was ridiculous.
"Thanks" I said with a smile in response. The bubbly personality didn't bother me, I found I could put up with most really, so long as they were nice people. I turned to tie Ridge up, I might have trusted him normally to stand there and be a good boy, but something told me Ridge now wouldn't really feel like listening. "Calm down." I whispered to him, stroking his nose lightly once I was certain he was secure. "Knight looks fine doesn't he. She doesn't hurt him, she won't hurt you."
I gave a small smile as I turned to face round to Ty again. "Although I think I should probably apologise in advance for anything he does. Ridge isn't exactly the most trusting of horses and can get a little unpredictable." "But we can all tell exactly what you'll do next Mouse." [/i] Ridge retorted, not exactly fond of my comment. He wasn't being sarcastic, and I knew he meant my quiet apologetic behaviour, I chose to ignore the comment.[/blockquote]

Knight stood there for wait seemed him forever! His ears where held off to the sides and he was glaring at me as if he would like to take a chunk out of my side either that or take me on my own diet walk. Either way he wasn't fond of our new company, especially the human. I bargain for one. Not two and company to occupy my living space you know. His words where bitter and cold in my head, I could feel the chill that rolled off his tongue. I kept a smile on though and then looked to Ridge who was wary of me. I could tell from the way Kat spoke to him. I ignored most of it though because the fact was every horse was different and they all came around in different fashion, and of coarse time.
Don't worry about it. I said with a smile towards Kat and a concerned look at Ridge something didn't seem right, but I didn't draw attention to it. Weight doesn't lose itself you know. Let's get back to your "fun" activity. I looked at Knight and scowled at him with disgust. Can't you be nice to anyone? I stated plainly under my breath. If you don't like it, there is a receipt in your pocket or maybe it's in that old feed bag you through out the other day. What was every wrong with sweet feed? Oh...buddy or mine.
I heard his voice turn velvet in my thoughts, thick with sarcasm but he always made me try to fight off a smile, even when I disapproved of his behavior. We where going to take a walk up towards that hill. Heard it was a cool place to catch a beach sunset. I said turning back to Kat still smiling and bubbly as ever.

I remained there in silence as I watched Ty turn around, muttering to Knight, clearly the horse was starting some sort of conversation. And he wasn't the only one.
"Mouse" [/i] His voice echoed inside my head, a shockingly gentle tone to it really, though I knew he was simply trying to get my attention, possibly some sympathy, then trouble would start. Yes Ridge I responded back through our thoughts, not turning around to face him, instead watching the sea. "I didn't want to stop." There we go, that was the grumpier tone returning, and he snorted a little, showing his disapproval again. "I wanted to go back to Catalpa"[/i] He continued to grumble, but I was focussing more on Ty's words, or attempting too anyway. "It sounds like a good plan." I nodded my head and smiled in response. "Seems that these two are getting a little restless anyway." I knew for certain that Ridge was a little unhappy with our current situation, and Knight didn't seem to look all that happy about it either.[/blockquote]

I smiled and nodded to her Yea they are, especially Knight I apologize for his horrid behavior. He has people issues or something. I looked to Knight who was looking displease of my statement. I thought he might try to defend himself in my thoughts but he didn't, all I heard was his breathing and the occasion word about maybe an apple or a carrot. I might be able to give him one if he learned to not be such a smart mouth.
My smile faded and then I turned to start up the hill. I looked over my shoulder to see if the other two where coming. I gave a slight wave as if to get them to hurry up or follow. Knight was more then revealed to go, but was not happy of my talk of the up coming hill or worse stopping again to socialize. Is there a reason you like this. Perhaps you specialize in torment and your just not telling me. I demand to see my contract as of now.
Two things he apparently didn't like, There will be food up there, I promiseI said with a bribe. I had some carrots in my backpack along with a few other things that I cared on my personal at all times. You never know when your going to be stuck someplace with no way back home.

I turned back to Ridge as Ty appologised once more for Knight's behaviour. I had little idea of anything going on in their little conversations though, I didn't know how rude he might possibly be, but it was the same with her and Ridge.
"She's as bad as you Mouse." [/i] Ridge stated, nudging me a little, possibly encouraging me to untie him as quickly as possible. "Apologising when it's not necessary."It's called being polite Ridge. I answered, I was getting the impression that horses didn't know all that much about manners, not Ridge anyway. Although, as soon as I concentrated on the thought I felt a little guilty. How could he know anything about manners when in the past he'd been abused. In all honesty he probably was a lot calmer than he could have been. Sorry Ridge. I stated after a while, as the two of us began walking, following behind Ty and Knight. "See, that's what I mean!" Ridge responded, his head held fairly high as he looked at the lands rather than myself or Ty, I got the feeling he was probably avoiding Knight's gaze too. I knew that he didn't understand why I'd apologised to him, but I didn't care all that much to be honest. "Come on, keep up." I stated simply, bringing our speed up a little more so that we could catch up with Ty and Knight. Ridge and I had fallen behind a little, though it didn't take too much effort and within a few moments we'd caught up with them again.[/blockquote]

I looked over to catch Knight's reaction who seemed to not like being followed by the other to. He must have thought that it was just going to be me and him again like it was before. I didn't understand his issue. Do I get food after this. His voice finally muffled off in my mind. I glad to see that his issues at least where not affecting his appetite. The day that happens I might need to call someone for a second upon on his sociological condition. I laughed to myself at the thought of someone telling me what was wrong with my help, after all, I found I'm more capable of doing it myself. Maybe. Depending if you tell me why you don't like people.
Knight look sneezed through his nostrils, his eyes never looked to me, but rather staying focus on the top of the hill. No doubt where he thought he would get food. I didn't pressure him to speak to me because I knew that he would on his own. Knight was not the type not to let a question or conversation go unfinished. Before I came here I had a owner, and food. He added not allowing the food thing to just be let go.
Anyway she wasn't very, how do I say, gentle. She had a firm hand and well when you didn't do something right. You tended to get a visit from her little buddy, POW. I looked at him my mouth almost dropped. I didn't know how anyone could possibly abuse animals. It was simply wrong; sick, silly and wrong.
We finally got to the top of the hill and I had to admit I was almost as out of breath as Knight who was most likely still hoping for a carrot. Our conversation didn't continue and I could tell that he was happy about that. I finally turned to Kat, The sun is suppose to set in about a half n hour. Are you going to stick around to watch it?

As Ridge and I drew closer to the top of the hill, the black horse slowed his pace, once more not feeling like having the company of others. I slowed down to match his pace but the pair of us continued to walk. She won't hurt you Ridge. I told him, gently running my hand along his neck, trying to calm him a little. Like Rachel, she didn't hurt you. Not all people are bad, and I promise that I won't let you near anyone who is. [/i] Ridge didn't respond to me, and we simply continued walking until we reached the top. I looked out across the view, Ridge remaining close to my side, still not believing my words apparently, but I couldn't be bothered to continue saying the same things over and over again. Clearly he wasn't listening to them anyway. I turned my attention back to Ty as she spoke to me and glanced towards Ridge. Surely he'd be comfortable with just half an hour longer? What do you think? I asked him, wanting to be on the safe side. "Fine"[/i] He stated simply, a small amount of annoyance in his tone. You sure? I double checked, I really didn't want to argue with him or make him unhappy. "I'll just keep out of the way." He stated simply and began to tug so he could do just that. "Yeah, I think so." I stated, beginning to walk where Ridge was leading me. "Provided he doesn't get too tired." I added, looking to Ridge. It was more of an attempt to cheer him up more than anything. "You'll get tired before me, Mouse"[/i] He retorted. Clearly it was working. I found a spot to tie him up and afterwards pulled out one of the carrots. "Here you go" I stated softly, holding out my palm for him to take the carrot, which he did so pretty quickly. "And if you remain calm, you can have some more." I added, stroking his nose before going over to join Ty again.[/blockquote]

I didn't bother to tie Knight I simply allowed him to graze around my feet as I plopped myself down on the ground. I slung my backpack onto the ground as well and then rifled through it in search of a carrot for Knight. I finally found it and then clucked to Knight who came over and placed his nose in my hands. He took the carrot in a greedy fashion and munched away. He then started nuzzling me hoping that I might give him another. I laughed and then gave in. I could hear Knight chuckling to himself and then I watched him return to grazing.
Beach sunsets are so uplifting. I said to myself and Kat. I looked over to her and smiled again. So, how long have you been a student here? I turned my eyes back on the rays that hit the sky with all sorts of colors. The once white clouds where starting to showing a hue of pink on the edges of there fluffiness.
